The journey to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games has been an intense and competitive period for many athletes, including Great Britain’s judoka Lachlan Moorhead. Despite his increasing performance and competitive spirit, Moorhead will not be competing in the Paris Games, falling short in the -81kg category amidst fierce international competition.

The Commonwealth Games winner in 2022 was born in Sheffield and residing in Penistone-Yorkshire, faced a challenging qualification period. The men's judo divisions have seen the rise of new powerful nations with strong martial arts traditions, adding to the already competitive landscape. Traditional judo powerhouses like Great Britain have felt this growing competition, and Moorhead's category was no exception.

Moorhead’s judo career has been marked by significant achievements. He was a gold medallist in the -81kg class at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and secured a bronze medal at the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Slam. Additionally, he placed ninth at the 2023 World Championships in Doha, Qatar.

Despite his commendable efforts, Moorhead’s results were not enough to secure a spot at the -81kg division at the Paris 2024 Olympics. His performance at various international events, including a third-place finish at the 2021 Abu Dhabi World Tour event and a seventh-place finish at the 2023 Almada World Tour event, highlighted his potential. However, the fierce competition and narrow margins in judo qualification meant that Moorhead fell just short of making the Olympic cut.

Background

Starting judo at the age of five, inspired by watching his father and friends practice, Moorhead quickly developed a passion for the sport. He trained at the Penistone Judo Club and later at the British Judo Olympic training centre in Walsall under coaches Matt Moorhead, Gordon Lambert, and Colin Oates. His preferred technique, kata-guruma, has been a key part of his judo style.

Moorhead recently graduated in 2024 with a degree in Business Management from the University of Birmingham. Outside of judo, he enjoys camping, hiking, and exploring the beautiful landscapes of Yorkshire. He is known for his grounded and philosophical approach to life and sport, emphasizing personal growth and resilience.

While the Paris 2024 Olympics may not be in the cards for Moorhead, his career is far from over. His journey to the Paris 2024 Olympics has been a testament to his hard work. Although he will not compete in Paris, his career highlights will for sure give him new spirit for next events. As he looks ahead, Moorhead’s focus and resilience will undoubtedly drive him to new heights in the world of judo.
