Denis Iartcev offers Russia an alternative U73kg

Tokyo Grand Slam bronze medallist Denis Iartcev won Russia’s first gold medal as they were made to wait until the last men’s final of the day to taste victory in Tyumen. The 23-year old Russian crushed the gold medal hopes of Buenos Aires Pan American Open winner Marcelo Contini of Brazil in a scrappy contest which was settled on shido penalties. The Brazilian infringed on two occasions while the Russian was only penalised once for passivity.
In the first semi-final Iartcev defeated teammate Zelimkhan Ozdoev (RUS) by ippon after 85 seconds while in the second semi-final Conitini resisted former European u23 Championships gold medallist Vadzim Shoka (BLR) by a sole yuko score.
The first bronze medal was won by Uali Kurzhev (RUS) as losing semi-final and teammate Ozdoev could not compete due to injury. The second bronze medal went to Oberwart European Open bronze medallist Alex William Pombo (BRA) who narrowly defeated Shoka with a waza-ari score from a modified version of a kata-guruma which failed to tell the story of the contest which saw a late rally from Shoka. The Brazilian almost come to a halt in the closing seconds as he received three shido penalties for passivity but held on for the win.
