Masako Doi of Japan defeated Beijing 2008 Olympic bronze medallist Ketleyn Quadros (BRA) in golden score of the Grand Prix in Budapest after a tense battle which failed to produce a score. Quadros slipped off the pace in added time and was reprimanded, for the third time, for being passive to hand the gold medal to Japan’s rising contender and Düsseldorf Grand Slam bronze medallist Doi.

In the first semi-final Hohhot Grand Prix bronze medallist Yang Junxia (CHN) lost out to Doi who prevailed by ippon in golden score. In the second semi-final Quadros stormed past Hungarian youngster and Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games winner Ozbas Szofi (HUN) by ippon.

The first bronze medal contest was won by Pan American Championships silver medallist Maylin Del Toro Carvajal (CUB) who ended a spirited run by 17-year-old Ozbas by a waza-ari score.

The second bronze medal was won by YANG who squeezed past 2017 Cancun Grand Prix bronze medallist Prisca Awiti-Alcaraz (MEX) by a waza-ari score.
