Havana Grand Prix bronze medallist Beka GVINIASHVILI (GEO) won the battle of the new generation of fighters in the -90kg category. Budapest Grand Prix silver medallist Krisztian TOTH (HUN), 20, and GVINIASHVILI, 18, served up a high-quality final which required golden score after both youngsters cancelled each out with a shido each for passivity after five minutes. The Georgian took from a waza-ari score and lifted TOTH back to his feet to share a warm embrace in a great show of respect between the two who will no doubt develop their friendship and rivalry on the tatami over the next decade.

In the first semi-final SHIMOWADA Shohei (JPN) fell to TOTH by two yuko scores while in the following contest while GVINIASHVILI booked his place in the final by holding down Marc ODENTHAL (GER) with a mune-gatame.

The first bronze medal was awarded to world bronze medallist and top seed who saw off ODENTHAL with an uchi-mata earning ippon after two minutes. The second bronze medal was captured by SHIMOWADA who defeated Gabor VER (HUN) with a tate-shiho-gatame leading to ippon with two minutes left.
