Sad loss of Danish judoka Anja Lunding

Last year’s Danish Champion Anja Lunding passed away on Saturday morning in Denmark. The 23-year old athlete is au-pair in Paris and studied at the University of Southern Denmark and was back in Denmark. A great shock for many judoka who know Lunding as a happy young judoka who make people laugh. Lunding was training in at Brønshøj Judo Club in the city of Brønshøj.

In her category U57kg she won the national title last year and she was in the final five times since 2011. As a junior she became Nordic Champion and took various youth titles in Denmark. Last year she competed at the European U23 Championships U52kg and in the World Tour at the Grand Prix in Samsun and European Cups in Rome and Sofia. She fought against some of the top athletes to try to get some traction in the senior division such as Kelly Edwards, Verena Thumm, Tamara Silva and Odette Giuffrida in February last year.

Her family wrote on her Facebook: "She was deeply loved and a young woman strong as few who now has found peace. Please share your finest memories, it will help us to overcome this loss. Mother, father and sister."
