British lightweight judoka Kelly Edwards is devastated after learning she will miss the chance to try and compete at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games through concussion.

Edwards has been told to take six months away from competition after taking a blow to the head at the Paris Grand Slam earlier this month, her third head injury in seven months. The 24-year-old, who is British champion, also suffered bad landings during events in Mongolia and Uzbekistan in 2015. She won Commonwealth Games silver in the U52kg category back in 2014 and was considered a medal prospect for Rio. But despite the disappointment at missing out on the Olympics, she has promised to come back stronger than ever later this year. "When I was given the advice of the medical team I was devastated," said Edwards. "I understand that I do need this time to heal. I have to accept that I will get injuries and this is just another injury.

"I shall come back stronger and better after a six-month block of good training, and will be focused on the 2017 World Championships in Budapest."
