Kate Howey Appointed Interim Performance Director of British Judo

British Judo has announced that Kate Howey MBE will serve as interim Performance Director following the departure of Nigel Donohue. Howey, a decorated judoka with Olympic bronze (1992) and silver (2000) medals, steps into the role with over two decades of coaching experience. She will oversee the national team’s performance strategy until a permanent successor is appointed.

“It is a great honour to step into the role following the excellent foundations that Nigel has left behind,” Howey stated. “I look forward to working with the team as we strive for continued success.”  

Nigel Donohue’s Legacy  
Donohue, who has led British Judo’s World Class Performance Programme (WCPP) since 2013, played a pivotal role in developing elite athletes and securing international success. Under his leadership, British Judo celebrated multiple Olympic and Paralympic medals and saw athletes like Chelsie Giles, Lucy Renshall, and Natalie Powell reach World No.1 rankings.  

Reflecting on his tenure, Donohue expressed gratitude for his time in the role, highlighting the growth of the sport and the support of key partners, including UK Sport and the University of Wolverhampton.  
“I leave British Judo knowing that we have built a solid foundation for future success in LA 2028 and Brisbane 2032,” he said.  

British Judo CEO Andrew Scoular confirmed that the organization will begin recruiting a permanent Performance Director soon, emphasizing that Howey’s appointment provides stability during the transition.  
“Kate’s extensive experience as both an athlete and a coach uniquely positions her to lead British Judo into a new era,” said Scoular.  
The upcoming recruitment process will determine the long-term leadership of British Judo as it continues its push for excellence on the global stage.
