Rome is once again the epicenter for European judo as it hosts the European Open Judo Tournament on November 9-10, 2024. This marks the 26th time the Italian capital has hosted the event, with 239 athletes from 31 nations set to compete. Known for its ancient gladiatorial history, Rome will witness intense judo battles, and a mix of veteran champions and emerging talents will bring added excitement to the event.

Leading the men’s lineup is 2023 World Champion Luka Maisuradze from Georgia, competing in the U90kg division. Maisuradze, after a break from the mat, will face competitors accustomed to the European Open level. A notable new competitor in this weight class is Frank de Wit of the Netherlands, typically a powerhouse in the U81kg division. His recent move to U90kg adds intrigue, as he could pose a serious challenge to the top-ranked judokas despite being unseeded.

In the women’s division, World silver medalist Giovanna Scoccimarro of Germany is making a return in the U70kg category. After multiple injuries sidelined her toward the end of the last Olympic cycle, Scoccimarro is now on a steady comeback, and Rome is her first step back onto the IJF World Tour. Her performance will be closely watched, as she looks to regain her top form.

Also in the women’s lineup is Cypriot judoka Zanet Michaelidou, who follows closely behind the U78kg top seed Migle Julija Dudenaite from Lithuania. Michaelidou has shown strong recent form, having secured her first IJF World Tour medal in Abu Dhabi before winning gold at the European Championships of the Small States. Training primarily in Italy, she will likely receive additional crowd support in Rome, which could give her a boost in this familiar environment.

Team Italy is fielding a robust group of competitors, blending experienced athletes with fresh talent. Among them, Giulia Carna (U57kg) and Irene Pedrotti (U70kg) bring notable competitive experience. Rising stars like Rebecca Valeriani (U48kg), who placed fifth at the Junior World Championships, and her brother Leonardo Valeriani (U73kg), who recently won gold at the Prague European Open, are expected to draw attention. Their performances could add a significant home advantage for Italy as it looks to make a strong showing in the tournament.

With seasoned champions and promising newcomers, this year’s European Open in Rome is shaping up to be a dynamic showcase of judo.
