Olympic judoka Denny Ebbers passes away at the age of 41

Dutch Atlanta Olympian Denny Ebbers passed away at the age of 41 years. Ebbers suffered a brain tumor. The heavyweight who won a European Senior bronze medal in 1995 in Birmingham.

Ebbers name was on the judo map since 1993 when he won the national junior title and bronze at the European Junior Championships. One year later at the age of 19 he was already vice World Military World Champion followed by the world title in 1997. He won several international judo events and at national level he was the ever lasting opponent of Dennis van der Geest.

 

At the international podium he fought judoka such as David Douillet (FRA), Imre Csosz (HUN), David Khakhaleishvili (GEO), Rafal Kubacki (POL), Harry van Barneveld (BEL), Sergey Kosorotov (RUS), Frank Moeller (GER), Naoya Ogawa (JPN), Shinichi Shinohara (JPN) ad Ernesto Perez (SPA), all World or Olympic medallists. Ebbers was among those great judoka.

Ebbers was diagnosed with cancer in 2009. At 17 July Ebbers celebrated 41 years, but his best party was in October when family, friends and colleagues honoured him with a great evening.
