Olympian Mario Sabino Jr. shot dead
Brazilian Olympic judoka Mario Sabino Junior was shot dead on Friday near Sao Paulo at the age of 47, the Brazilian Judo Federation announced. Sabino Junior represented his country at the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games in the U100kg category, and won bronze at the 2003 world championships in Osaka where Kosei Inoue won the title. Michele Monti was fifth, he passed away this year.
Marcos André de Carvalho Sabino also won gold the same year in the Pan American Games in 2003.
“The Brazilian judo family is in mourning after the death of Mario Sabino Junior at the age of 47,” the federation said in a statement.
After retiring he joined the police force and had also been a member of the staff of the national judo team since 2012.
Sabino was also a corporal in the 4th Battalion of the Interior Military Police in Bauru, São Paulo, and the circumstances of his death are being cleared by the corporation. Both men were found dead beside a car. “Marião” was Military World Champion in 2000 and 2001 and fought some of the biggest athletes in the world like Kosei Inoue, Pawel Nastula, Ariel Zeevi, Nicolas Gill, Ihar Makarau and many more top athletes.
