The Dutch Junior won an amazing 10 gold medals and 19 medals in total. Never a country has won so many gold medals at this level. What happened at the European Cup in Coimbra?

Dutch head coach Edwin Steringa reacts:  "We came to Coimbra with a very big group so naturally there are lots of medal chances. This is the first competition of the year at Junior European Cup level and we brought many athletes. Later in the season, we make a selection to make the final selection for the European Junior Championships. We like to come to Coimbra, it is a good tournament to start  the year”.

A variety of youngsters captured the medals, not just the last year juniors such as Kevin Bakker, Kim Akker, Tornike Tsjakadoea and Jim Heijman, but also youngsters from 1999 such as Jorien Visser and 1998 born Sanne Vermeer, one of those revelations in the team in a competitive weight class, who defeated Lubjana Piovesana.

Steringa: “She is a Cadet World Champion but it’s her first year in juniors and she won against strong opponent in the final” added Steringa. On the other hand, not so surprising for the coach was the victory in U100kg of Simeon Catharina, also a Cadet World Champion.

Over the last two years the Netherlands won the most Junior European Cup titles of all nations.
