Where some athletes are preventing to fight each other before the Olympic Games, the women’s U78kg top athletes may again cross paths at the IJF World Masters in Guadalajara. Olympic champion Kayla Harrison (USA) and Rio 2016 Olympic Games arch-rival, Mayra Aguiar (BRA), are both in Mexico and could renew their acquaintances just months out from the Games.

Harrison and Aguiar, who are two of the major gold medal candidates in this category, are locked in their fascinating head-to-head series with eight wins apiece from their 16 meetings. Olympic silver medallist Gemma Gibbons (GBR) and European bronze medallist Natalie Powell (GBR) will bid to outperform each other to capture Team GB’s U78kg slot at Rio 2016. Both roommates are captured in the same pool and if both win they will battle in the quarter final. Dutch number two seed Guusje Steenhuis seems to be a good draw, separated from Mayra Aguiar, both haven’t met before and this could be the semi final. One of the British should normally be opposed to Olympic champion Kayla Harrison.

Still the IJF Masters will miss World number two Audrey Tcheumeo, Luise Malzahn, Marhinde Verkerk and Ana Velensek.
